With great pleasure, I announce the RESULTS of the contest. There were so many very beautiful haiku sent to this contest, it was immensely difficult to choose "The One" :) I also have to say, that unfortunately some of the great haiku this time, strayed from the theme of the contest, and of the painting, too far to claim awards. Still, it was a delight to read all your works, and I thank all of you for having made this contest such a celebration of haiku, and so much fun!

This haiku has it all: keen observation, the state of mind of the author called awareness, materiality, selflessness, loneliness, non-intellectuality, contradiction, simplicity, freedom ... and so much more! The real nature of each thing is presented, and more so -- of all things. The real poetical nature of things -- the things as they are. The haiku shows us what we knew all the time, but didn't pay attention to, most of the time: that when we open our heart to Mother Nature, we are poets in so far as we live at all. The author grasped the inexpressible meaning of the things in her haiku -- and with her, we feel freedom, loneliness, and selflessness in this clouds, this stream, this wind, and this sky above us... Valeria did comprehend the meaning of the spring stream, the meaning I tried to express in the painting. A very profound, meaningful, real haiku -- the haiku that shows me that this author does live the Way of Haiku. Brava, Valeria! :)

The haiku is simple yet profound. There is no pathos or sympathy for the beautiful cherry tree which is left unnoticed by the stream. In fact, the cherry blossom brings out the nature of a mountain brook, in its running along no matter what beauty grows along its shores, just as a mirror reflects all things without favour or admiration. The most beautiful thing on its way is not noticed by the stream -- and this is the true and poetic nature of it. That is what strikes us. There is no emotions in the nature, only the current of cold waters between wide banks of stones and gravel. Another great observation in the state of awareness by the author, and a very skilfully written haiku. Brava, Ginka! :)

The term "floating world" is attributed to the Japanese art of ukiyo-e. As we know, it is an art implying the pleasures of theatres, restaurants, teahouses, beautiful geisha girls, and such. At the same time, this world of urban pleasures was also spirited by the traditional Japanese love of nature, and while many ukiyo-e were in fact just posters, advertising theatre performances and brothels etc., ukiyo-e artists like Hiroshige and Hokusai have had a big impact on landscape painting all over the world. These all things come to mind when we read this haiku. The author is looking at a pink flower petal in its fully developed beauty, and the sofisticated curve of the petal excites her, and evokes the sense of admiration she had experienced at different stages in her life by getting acquainted with ukiyo art. The first association that comes to her mind, and the one she deeply feels, is the true one -- as it was true for J.W Hackett in his haiku:
A derelict car
amid grazing nonchalance ...

As a sumi-e artist, I can easily relate to Isabelle's experience. When I am about to complete my painting, I touch the rice paper one last time, lift the brush, and put it on a brush-holder. And yes -- the birds are the last detail I add to the painting! From this moment on, a painting is alive, it lives on its own, as a grown up child I send to the world. Freely and easily the four birds are flying away, and at that moment of ending and beginning, an artist's heart is overflowed with so many different feelings! Anyone who created a piece of art with passion and excitement, knows this feeling -- the feeling The Creator of the world must have had! And somehow, the author of this haiku managed to express this feeling by simply describing the common action of an artist, with no artifficial sentimentality, intellectuality, exaggeration, etc. Brava, Isabelle! :)
Two card size paintings will go to the two poets to somewhere in USA and Kenya!

As always, the contest brought so many wonderful haiku that I feel bad for not having the chance to give prizes to so many more poets! :) But I do have the chance to tell you that you are good haiku writers, and I admire your best haiku. Дорогие друзья!
С огромным удовольствием я объявляю результаты конкурса. Вы прислали столько много прекрасных хайку, мне было ужасно трудно выбирать "то самое" :) Должна сказать, что в этот раз многие очень хорошие хайку были совсем не по теме рисунка, и из-за этого только не могли претендовать на призы. И всё же, было так здорово читать ваши работы -- благодарю всех за то, что своим участием вы сделали конкурс таким праздником хайку, принёсшим столько радости!

В этом хайку есть всё: острая наблюдательность, состояние сознания автора, которое называется "осознанность", материальность, самоотречённость, одиночество, не-интеллектуальность, противоречивость, простота, свобода ... и много чего ещё! Истинная природа каждой вещи представлена здесь, какова она есть, и более того -- природа всех вещей. Истинная поэтическая природа вещей -- вещей как таковых. Хайку показывает нам то, что мы всегда знали, но чаще всего не обращали на это внимания: а именно, что когда мы открываем своё сердце природе, то мы -- поэты, постольку, поскольку мы вообще живём. Автору удалось схватить невыразимый смысл вещей в этом хайку, и вместе с ней мы чувствуем свободу, одиночество, самоотречённость в этих облаках, в этом потоке, в этом ветре, в этом небе над головой ... Лера действительно постигла сущность этой весенней стремнины, смысл, который я старалась передать в этом рисунке. Очень глубокое, полное смысла, настоящее хайку -- хайку, которое мне лично показывает, что Лера идёт Путём хайку. Браво, Лера! :)

горный ручей
Хайку простое и глубокое. Никакого пафоса или сочувствия прекрасной вишне, которую ручей не замечает. Фактически, вишня выявляет природу горного ручья, его стремление вперёд вне зависимости от того, какие красоты на его пути по берегам, -- как зеркало, отражающее вещи без какой-либо благосклонности или восхищения. Самые прекрасные вещи у него на пути не замечаются этим ручьём -- и в этом его истинная поэтическая сущность. Это то, что нас поражает. У природы нет чувств, только этот холодный поток меж широких берегов, валунов и гальки. Ещё одно острое наблюдение в состоянии осознанности, при этом искусно описанное в хайку. Браво, Гинка! :)
Ещё одно суми-е меньшего размера (которое я покажу в следующем посте) отправляется в Болгарию!

Термин "floating world" по-русски означает "текучий мир", "бренный мир" -- так называют японское искусство укиё-е, гравюры по дереву. Как известно, эти гравюры включали темы удовольствия от театров, ресторанов, чайных домиков, прекрасных девушек-гейш, и т.п. В то же время, в этот мир городских удовольствий был привнесён дух традиционной японской любви к природе, и тогда как многие из этих гравюр были просто плакатами, театральными и бордельными афишами, -- такие художники, как Хирошиге и Хокусай оказали огромное влияние на пейзажную живопись во всём мире. Всё это вспоминается, когда читаешь это хайку. Автор смотрит на розовый лепесток цветка в его полностью раскрывшейся красоте, и этот замысловатый изгиб лепестка волнует её, и вызывает чувство восхищения, которое она испытывала при знакомстве с искусством "текучего мира" в разные периоды жизни. И первая ассоциация, которая к ней приходит и глубоко ею ощущается, как раз и является истинной -- такой же истинной, как в стихе Джеймса У. Хэккета:
Брошенный автомобиль
среди беззаботности пастбища ...
путь хайку.

четыре птицы взлетают --

Как художник суми-е, я легко могу соотнести опыт Исабель со своим. Когда я почти закончила рисунок, я, коснувшись в последний раз бумаги, поднимаю кисточку вверх и кладу на специальную подставку. И да -- птицы обычно последняя деталь в пейзаже типа этого. С этого момента, рисунок оживает, он начинает жить своей жизнью, как выросший ребёнок, которого я отпускаю в мир. Легко и свободно четыре птицы улетают, и в этот момент окончания и начала сердце художника переполняют столько разных чувств! Любой, кто когда-либо создавал произведение искусства, отдаваясь этому со страстью и волнением, знает это чувство -- такое чувство должно было быть у Создателя! И каким-то образом автор этого хайку сумела передать это чувство простым описанием обычных действий художника, без искусственной сентиментальности, интеллектуализации, преувеличенности, и пр. Браво, Исабель! :)
Два рисунка размером с открытку отправляются в какое-то место в США, и в Кению!

Как всегда, на конкурс было прислано столько прекрасных хайку, что я чувствую себя неудобно, что не могу выслать призы ещё многим, кому бы хотелось. Но у меня есть возможность сказать всем этим хорошим поэтам, что я восхищаюсь их лучшими хайку. Будет справедливо назвать тех, кто близко подошёл к победителям. Им тоже мои искренние поздравления!

Есть ещё много хайку, которые мне очень нравятся, и я бы дала призы им всем -- но к сожалению, каждый конкурс имеет рамки и ограничения. Тем не менее, в этот раз я решила воздать дань уважения одному талантливому и очень эрудированному человеку, лучшему на свете мужу, который меня во всём поддерживает и помогает, включая корректирование моих переводов и даже выбор лучших хайку в каждом конкурсе :) Так что вот, представляю вам ещё одно "Почётное упоминание" в этом конкурсе, назовём его "Деннины победители" :))) В конце концов, хайку -- это всегда Любовь, и во многом благодаря Денниной любви к хайку этот конкурс вообще возможен.

Тебе авансом зато приз выслан, хаха :))))(это я уже сейчас могу хихикать -- а то только строчила как сумасшедшая и таблетки глотала :)))) Но в конечном итоге -- этим конкурсом я довольна очень, много новых хороших поэтов мы узнали, правда же? А уж переводить и комментировать -- одно удовольствие было! Ну, не считая всех дурацких технических накладок, конечно, которые мне ЖЖ устраивал :)))))
Да вот, между прочим -- у Денни с тобой много общего! Честно! :)
Лера и Миша очень большие молодцы, просто здорово! Радик тоже порадовал -- такая атмосфера у него создана... я просто детство своё ишимское вспомнила :) Мне многие у вас всех понравились, но ... В следующий раз, значит, давайте побеждайте -- на летнюю тему!

Я даже не знаю, на каком лучше -- сейчас уже практически разницы нет, я даже не замечаю, что на каком-то лучше или хуже... Сначала, в первые год-два -- заметно легче было писать на русском. А теперь уже одинаково, я уже сны вижу на английском и думаю на английском... Я ж в полностью англоязычном окружении живу, куда ж деваться :)

I just read your comments about the 'floating world' and I found myself nodding at your words as I read them. In the fall of 2001, I took a class on Japanese Prints and one of the required readings was, The Floating World by James A. Michener. I was so fascinated with the floating world that I didn't sell the book back at the end of the class! Your comments are right on with my thoughts and intent of my haiku.
Thank-you for all you do, to advance haiku/haiga and to encourage haijins around the world.

I am very glad that you enjoyed the contest, and thank you again for your lovely haiku! I did think that it was not a mere accident that you came up with the "floating world" haiku -- and am very pleased that I was right :)

Dear Origa san, thank you for organising what has been enjoyable, challenging and remarkable. You have brought together so many of us -- thank you for your care and your hard work -- and for the wonderful haiku you have gathered for us to enjoy.As a beginner in sumi-e, my haiku moment came when seeing the painting of the picture... yes, the birds came last, and then there was the contentment of resting your brush and looking at the whole. And it was good...! And it brought back memories of a story I once read, where the painted birds were so life-like that they flew off!
Congratulations on your painting and your contest -- and now, you can *really* rest!

It was just a wild guess -- and here you are, a fellow artist! :) I think I remember the story about the painted birds -- and it is, I believe, a wild dream of any artist, that his/her paintings come alive ...

Конечно, вишни цветут уже тысячу лет, и все поэты про них писали. Но так, как Вы их можете увидеть -- никто больше в мире не может. Вот потому и надо про своё видение писать -- потому что кроме Вас, никто это не напишет ...
Да, с каждым разом всё больше очень хороших интересных стихов -- и правда, надо бы их как-то сохранить, сделать доступным всем, кто хочет прочитать... Если будут идеи -- кидайте! :)
