RESULTS of the Sixth Calico Cat haiku contest.
Dear friends,
With great pleasure I announce the RESULTS of the contest which was dedicated to the shining memory of a fellow haijin Ginka Biliarska. With so many beautiful haiku submitted, my task was very difficult. As it happens, some of the very good works strayed from the theme of the contest, and of the painting, too far to claim awards. Still, it was a delight to read all your works, and I thank all of you for having made this contest such a celebration of haiku friendship throughout the world, and so much fun! It is my heartful beleif that Ginka would be happy to read all your haiku, and share this fun :)

A sensitive and direct observation of a simple yet high moment in life. Two skillfully juxtaposed images, a chilly autumn morning when the nature seems almost dead (as it's stressed by showing a frozen dewdrop), and a lively tiny creature, a grasshopper, doing its usual tapping on the leaves, but this morning, already on the first frost... It evokes a painful feeling of frailness of life, and a lump in the throught... Life and death, fleeting moment and permanence, the Mother Nature's embracement of all living things and yet the impassivity for them, the profound symbolism in that grasshopper's tapping on a frozen dewdrop, and much more -- are shown in this poem in only fourteen syllables. The way it is expressed, shows admirable skill and restraint. Each word is carefully selected for its full effect, and I particularly praise the choice of "taps". This is a most sensitive and subtle haiku with exemplary expression, a masterpiece of haiku.It deeply corresponds with the theme of the contest, and the dedication. Brava, Kilmeny!

A poignant and haunting moment of high significance.The direct yet suggestive picture painted in this haiku shows in a symbolic meaning an ambient harmony of the wedding ring and the seasonal flowers offered to the dead wife. In many countries in Europe, chrysanthemums are the flowers for the dead, they are often seen in cemeteries. Chrysanthemum is also a symbol of longevity in Japan, and as such, in this haiku they suggest that the death/departure survived by a long lasting love and memory of the husband/widower. Multilayered, skillfully composed, "classic" haiku, with obvious relations to the theme and dedication of this contest -- and needless to say, with such an immediate striking effect on the readers. I would suggest (and I kept it in mind while translating) ellipses at the end of L1, both in English and in Russian versions: it will reinforce the effect of the last departure painted by words in this haiku. Bravo, Petar!
The sumi-e "Chrysanthemum and Grasshopper" shown on the contest page, will go to Australia; and I painted another similar sumi-e with the same subjects, which will go to Bulgaria!

The first haiku paints a simple picture we all may have seen many times, something that we normally take for granted. And yet it's a profound and riveting haiku moment: one that provides an affecting, keenly observed experience. The colorful autumn countryside (especially in Italy) is juxtaposed with black-and-white printed flowers, possibly in an obituary column. Beneath the simple observation, the symbolism of the colorfulness of life and monochrome of death, is subtly suggested. And when we realize it, a chill runs down the spine... How close life and death are -- in fact, they are here and now, at the same time... All it takes to show this to us in short three lines, is only a hajin.
The second haiku also shows a simple yet meaningful moment of experience. The flowers that a little child sees in the garden, seem to be alive. But are they as alive as we humans are? Can they hear us, see us, talk and understand us? The child wants to know, and needs to know -- and isn't it one of those things that we all want to know? The keen awareness of ourselves being an integral part of nature, is expressed with such firsthand sincerety through the child's mind as only real haiku poetry can express... and a haiku poet with a child's heart. Brava, Lera!
Since Lera won two Second prizes, she is entitled to two paintings of a smaller size (and not necessarily on a rice paper); or she may choose one original sumi-e of the same size and subject as the First prize (as she already expressed her desire to have this 'Chrysanthemum and Grasshopper' painting :)) This is also for the first time in this contest that a winner can decide on a prize! :) The prize will go to Italy!

An unusual in its subject of a non-material thing, Viola's haiku offering is nevertheless a sensuous experience which is so familiar to us all. The even number of flowers suggests a funeral or a memorial service in Russia, so the fragment in L1 sets up the scene. The phrase in L2 and 3 shows something that we see with our inner vision, with the acute perception we acquire at the moment like that -- a loved one, or someone who had lived with us, has gone as a physical matter, and we can almost physically perceive as the soul is carried away, too... I burst into tears every time I read this haiku. Brava, Viola!

This melancholy haiku in a classic fragment-phrase pattern, by Nina, strikes me as a powerful requiem for Ginka, and for the passing life in general. The poet expressed her feelings for the late friend with such selflessness, sincerety and poignancy that it's just impossible to read without tears. The symbolism in the beautiful images in this haiku is admirable. Brava, Nina!

Another simple yet profound moment of life and death, in Rositza's haiku. We see our loved dead in our dreams, we speak with them, hear their voices... How often want we to believe that they give us warnings, advices, share some knowledges with us. We want to keep in touch with those we loved, and we hope that they feel our love... that they KNOW... In this simple regular way of speech, the author expressed her love for the late grandma. But not only that -- the love for all our dead, who are always with us as long as we remember them. As long as we remember -- Ginka is also with us, and SHE KNOWS... Brava, Rositza!
Three card size paintings will go: one -- to Russia, and two -- to Bulgaria.

Дорогие друзья!
С огромным удовольствием я объявляю РЕЗУЛЬТАТЫ конкурса, который был посвящён светлой памяти друга-хайдзина Гинки Билярской. Очень много хороших хайку прислано, и выбрать было очень нелегко. Как всегда, некоторые хорошие работы были совсем не по теме, к сожалению. Но и эти работы, как и все остальные, было приятно читать, и я благодарю всех за то, что мы сделали этот конкурс праздником дружбы хайдзинов со всего мира! Я искренне верю, что Гинка читает эти хайку, и радуется вместе с нами! :)
На этот раз мы поставили рекорд -- сразу ДВА первых места в конкурсе!

Чуткое и точное наблюдение простого и в то же время высокого момента жизни. Два умело сопоставленных образа: зябкого осеннего утра, когда природа кажется почти мёртвой (это подчёркнуто показом замёрзшей росинки), и живости крошечного создания, кузнечика, привычно прыгающего по листьям, но на этот раз уже при первом заморозке... Картина вызывает щемящее ощущение хрупкости жизни, комок в горле ... Жизнь и смерть, преходящесть момента и постоянство, приятие матерью природой всех живых существ и в то же время её бесстрастность, глубокий символизм в этом топтании кузнечиком замёрзшей росинки и ещё многое -- показаны всего в 14 слогах. Всё это выражено с восхитительным мастерством и деликатностью. Каждое слово тщательно выбрано, чтобы оно оказывало наибольший эффект, в частности я в восторге от слова "топчет". Какое пронзительное и тонкое хайку, с образцовым способом выражения, шедевр хайку. Оно глубоко соответствует теме конкурса и посвящению. Браво, Килмени!

Ясная и наводящая на размышления картина показывает в символическом виде гармонию, окружающую обручальное кольцо рядом с цветами для умершей жены. Во многих странах Европы хризантемы -- цветы мёртвых, их приносят на кладбище. Но хризантемы в Японии и символ долголетия, и как таковые, в этом хайку они показывают, как любовь и неувядающая память мужа продолжаются после смерти жены. Многоуровневое, мастерски написанное, "классическое" хайку, с очевидной связью с темой конкурса, не говоря уже о моментальном сильном воздействии на чувства читателя. Я предлагаю автору (и сделала это в русском переводе) многоточие после первой строки, это усилит эффект, который автор создаёт словами. Браво, Петар!

Первое хайку -- простая картинка, которую мы все видели много раз, и воспринимаем как должное. А ведь это глубокий и захватывающий момент хайку: такой, который создаёт волнующий, остро переживаемый опыт. Многоцветный осенний деревенский пейзаж (особенно такой, как итальянский) сопоставлен с чёрно-белыми напечатанными цветами, вероятно в некрологе. Под обыденным наблюдением лежит тонкий намёк на символизм: "разноцветие" жизни и "монохромность" смерти. Мороз по коже, когда осознаёшь это ... Как близко жизнь и смерть -- практически одновременно рядом, всегда ... Всё, что нужно, чтобы это увидеть -- три короткие строчки, написанные хайдзином ...
Второе хайку также показывает простой и в то же время значительный момент опыта. Цветы, которые малыш видит в саду, кажутся ему живыми существами. Такие же ли они живые, как и мы? Слышат и видят ли они нас, разговаривают и понимают ли нас? Ребёнок хочет знать, ему это нужно узнать -- не так же ли и мы тоже хотим это знать? Это острое осознание себя как неотъемлемой части природы выражено с непосредственной искренностью через детское сознание, как только настоящий поэт хайку может выразить ... тот, который сохранил в себе детское сердце. Браво, Лера!
За два вторых приза Лера может получить два меньшего размера рисунка (и возможно, не на рисовой бумаге); или она может выбрать один такого же размера оригинал суми-е (поскольку она уже выразила желание получить этот рисунок :)) Впервые в конкурсе даётся возможность выбора приза! Приз полетит в Италию!

Необычное своим изображением нематериального, хайку Виолы тем не менне предлагает знакомый нам всем чувственный опыт. Чётное количество цветов в России означает похороны или поминки, поэтому фрагмент в первой строке сразу рисует место действия. Фраза (2-3 строки) показывает нечто, что мы видим внутренним взором, тем острым восприятием, которое приходит к нам в такие моменты: кто-то любимый, или просто живший среди нас, ушёл от нас физически, и мы почти физически ощущаем, как и его душа уносится прочь ... У меня слёзы выступают каждый раз, когда я читаю это хайку ... Браво, Виола!

Очень грустное хайку Нины, построенное по классической схеме фрагмент-фраза, поразило меня как мощный реквием по Гинке, и по уходящей жизни вообще. Поэтесса выразила своё чувство к усопшей подруге с такой самоотверженностью, искренностью и горечью, что невозможно читать это хайку без слёз. Превосходно выражен символизм в этом хайку. Браво, Нина!

Ещё один проникновенный момент жизни и смерти -- в хайку Росицы. Мы видим любимых умерших людей во сне, разговариваем с ними, слышим их глоса ... Как часто нам хочется верить, что они предупреждают нас, советуют, делятся какими-то знаниями. Мы хотим поддерживать связь с теми, кого любили, и надеемся, что они чувствуют нашу любовь... что они ЗНАЮТ ... В этом простом разговорном языке выражена любовь автора к умершей бабушке. Но не только это -- тут выражена вообще наша любовь к нашим мёртвым, которые живы, пока мы их помним. Пока мы помним -- Гинка тоже с нами, и она ЗНАЕТ ... Браво, Росица!
Три рисунка размером с открытку полетят один в Россию, и два в Болгарию.
