Results of the XI Calico Cat International bilingual haiku contest.

Dear friends, I am happy to announce the RESULTS of the contest. This time Calico Cat collected so many very good and beautiful haiku: the final selection was 28, and I had to be cruel and heartless to bring this number to more realistic one :) What I was looking for in the haiku: faithfulness to the theme of the painting, using in some way the images in the sumi-e, freshness, clear sensual imagery, sincerity, originality, deeper meaning powerful language, spiritual and emotional involvement, and definitely -- for the talent and skill of the poet. Above all, the most appealing to me are those haiku that speak to my feelings and involve me somehow in the scene. I was happy to find that so many poems in this contest show these qualities! Thank you all for your love for haiku that spans continents! -- Дорогие друзья, c большой радостью объявляю РЕЗУЛЬТАТЫ этого конкурса. Как всегда, в этот раз Калико Кошка снова собрала очень много прекрасных хайку: в моём окончательном списке было 28, и чтобы привести это число к более реалистичному виду, пришлось быть жестокой и бессердечной :) Что я прежде всего искала в хайку: верность теме рисунка, использование его образов, свежесть, искренность, оригинальность, глубокий смысл, выразительную силу языка, духовную и эмоциональную вовлечённость автора, и конечно, талант и мастерство. Кроме всего этого, для меня наиболее интересны хайку, которые меня эмоционально задевают. К своей большой радости, я нашла очень много хайку с этими качествами! Спасибо вам всем за любовь к хайку, соединяющую континенты! :)

This time we have an unusual and unique haiku as a winner. It has two clearly different meanings, and could be interpreted is two different ways. The first meaning of this haiku: the jungles (rain forest, in modern PC terms) are shrinking, and their 'man of the house', or, 'king of the jungles' as he's called sometimes -- the great ape orangutan -- is now considered an endangered species. Their quantity is constantly reducing. The great apes, or hominidae (hominids), are chimpanzees, gorillas, humans, and orangutans So, that "man of the forest" in the haiku is our closest relative in animal kingdom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hominidae). Their brains are larger and more developed than, say, monkeys, and apes can learn and pass along information. Their facial expressions are so fascinating, they resemble ours! All non-human great apes have been able to learn a sign language and communicate with each other. Like us, they can grab things and operate with them. And they are now coming to extinction... Are we next? The author of the haiku is saddened with the fact (as I believe we all should), and she expresses it with such deep, poignant, yet subtle and delicate poetic power -- you instantly perceive this tragedy as your own... We are all related -- and all dependant on each other. We are but milliards of tiny grains of the Universe. We should care for each other and protect each other -- and the 'forest" (our planet) as our mutual home. All these global thoughts and ideas, all these strong and genuine feelings are condensed in such a short and beautifully crafted poem! Yet -- that is not all. The "shrinking" one may be thought of as a reluctunt, hesitant, shy -- and so the "man of the forest" in the haiku could be the one with those qualities. Then we have the relationship between the two of them -- one "king of the jungle", and one person. Or, it could be an unresolved metaphor for two people's relationship, and voila! -- we witness an intimate lirycal dialog between two sympathetic persons. An exquisite, profoundly meaningful, and stunningly beautiful haiku -- BRAVA, Beverley! Btw, Beverley was our very first winner -- in the First Calico Cat contest :) She also won a Third prize in this contest, and some Honorable Mentions! Wow -- talking about one scary winner! :)) The sumi-e "Orangutan and Lizard" goes to Australia! -- В этот раз победителем стало необычное и уникальное хайку. В нём возможны два совершенно разных смысла, и ему можно дать различные интерпретации. Первый смысл этого хайку: джунгли (или "влажный лес", как с недавнего времени их называют из политкорректности) сокращаются, и их "хозяин", или "король джунглей" -- орангутанг -- считается видом, нуждающимся в защите. Поголовье приматов постоянно сокращается. К большим приматам, или гоминоидам, относятся шимпанзе, гориллы, орангутанги, и человек. Так что этот "хозяин леса" в хайку -- наш ближайший родственник в царстве животных. Мозг приматов больше и более развит, чем, например, обычных обезьян, приматы способны обучаться и передавать информацию. Выражения лиц у них напоминают наши, потому нам так интересно за ними наблюдать. Все приматы способны изучить и пользоваться развитым языком жестов, общаясь между собой. Как человек, они способны держать предметы в руках и оперировать ими. И вот сейчас они на пути к исчезновению... А кто следующие -- мы? Автор хайку опечалена (как и все мы должны быть) и выражает это с такой глубокой, горькой поэтической силой, но в то же время нежно и деликатно -- мы моментально ощущаем трагедию как свою собственную. Мы все связаны и зависим друг от друга в этом мире. Мы все ничто иное как песчинки во Вселенной, и нам следует заботиться и охранять друг друга и наш общий дом, планету -- наш "лес". Все эти глобальные идеи и сильные чувства сконденсированы в этом мастерски написанном хайку! Но и это ещё не всё! Слово shrinking может содержать значения сдержанности, нерешительности, стеснительности (у этого "лесного человека") -- и тогда смысл хайку оказывается совсем другим: перед нами отношения двоих -- "хозяина леса" и человека, или, если допустить здесь скрытую метафору -- мы видим интимный диалог двух симпатизирующих друг другу личностей. Изысканное, с глубокими смыслами, поразительно красивое хайку -- Брава, Беверли! Кстати, Беверли была победителем первого конкурса Калико Кошка, а также занимала Третье место и Почётные Упоминания. Просто какой-то страшный победитель! :)) Суми-е "Орангутанг и Ящерица" едет в Австралию.

The haiku, at first glance, is playing with images in the sumi-e -- yet the idea in this haiku is deeper. Dirt road represents basic simple life, as natural as it gets. The so called "civilization" has not yet corrupted the heartfelt behavior and healthy impulses of the bearded driver. He treats living creatures as equals, and feels himself in harmony with the environment. In our "civilized" cities, driving on highways, etc. -- we see so many our little brothers killed by cars, or otherwise being victims of our human unhealhty life style. Most of us don't take time to stop and think about it -- to stop and hold back for a lizard to cross the road... This haiku strikes the chord of our genuine proper perception of Mother Nature -- and as such, it strikes the best cords in our souls. Thanks to the poet for bringing this thoughtfulness and this genuine spirit to our contest -- BRAVA, Maria! The original sumi-e of a smaller size goes to South Africa. -- В этом хайку, на первый взгляд, обыгрываются образы рисунка, но идея тут гораздо глубже. Грунтовая дорога символизирует простую в своих основах жизнь, естественную насколько это вообще может быть. Так называемая "цивилизация" ещё не испортила искренность и здоровые инстинкты бородатого водителя. Он воспринимает живых существ как ровню, ощущает себя в гармонии с окружающей средой. В наших "цивилизованных" городах, проезжая по скоростным трассам, мы видим столько братьев наших меньших, сбитых машинами или ещё каким-то образом ставших жертвами нашего человеческого нездорового образа жизни. Большинство из нас не находят времени остановиться и задуматься об этом -- остановиться и дать ящерице пересечь дорогу... Это хайку нас остановило, задело струны неподдельного истинного восприятия Матери Природы -- и таким образом задело лучшие струны нашей души. Спасибо автору за то, что принесла этот чистый дух вдумчивости и подлинности на наш конкурс -- Брава, Мария! Оригинальное суми-е меньшего размера едет в Южную Африку.

The first two haiku show some particularly sympathetic stages in life, development in life -- especially next to each other. Bette's haiku captures attention from the very first line -- with the fresh metaphor. Next two lines add even more charm: the unusual image of sunset juxtaposed to an unusual picture of two pregnant creatures together, making such a lovely and very touching juxtaposition. All I can say -- Ahh! and Brava, Bette! Then we see the lonliness of an old age, and again a very unusual and fresh expression of sympathy (maybe unintended, from the lizard -- but who knows? it could be the lizard's feelings for the old ape!) Just like it so often happens in our lives when someone takes care of the elderly totally unexpectedly... What struck me at once was that expected unexpectedness, the poignant fact of life depicted with natural simplicity and art. Bravo, Garry! And as a kind of a resume, a summation of these two -- the dialog in Sakuo san's haiku: so lively, humorous yet meaningfully serious, so refreshingly original! Who's telling the lizard about forest -- an ape? a human? another lizard? Mother Nature herself? Is the speaker trying to convince her -- or answer her question? It doesn't matter -- what matters is the lightness (karumi) and zen-like depth and simplicity of this speech, and of the haiku. Bravo, Sakuo san! All three poets (two in the US, and one in Japan) will receive original sumi-e of smaller sizes. -- В двух хайку показаны конкретные вызывающие сочувствие фазы жизни, её развитие (особенно рядом друг с другом). Первое захватывает с первой строки необычной метафорой, а следующие строки добавляют очарования: необычный образ заката сопоставлен с необычной картиной двух беременных существ рядом, и это такое прекрасное и трогающее сопоставление. Всё, что я могу сказать -- ах! и Брава, Бети! В следующем хайку мы видим одинокую старость, и снова необычное и свежее выражение симпатии (может, ненамеренное со стороны ящерки, но как знать? может, она сочувствует старому примату?) Прямо как и в жизни часто бывает: кто-то совсем неожидаемый заботится о старом человеке ... Это и ударило меня сразу -- ожидаемая неожиданность, горький факт жизни, изображённый с естественной простотой и мастерством. Браво, Гэри! И как некий итог, обобщение этих двух -- диалог в хайку Сакюо сана: такой живой, юмористический и одновременно с серьёзным смыслом, такой освежающе оригинальный! Кто говорит ящерке про лес -- орангутанг? человек? сама Мать Природа? Пытается ли говорящий убедить её, или отвечает на вопрос? Неважно -- важны эта лёгкость (каруми) и эта дзеновская простота и речи, и хайку. Браво, Сакюо сан! Два оригинальных суми-е едут в два штата Америки, а один -- в Японию.
