I am happy to announce the RESULTS of the contest. As always, there were many more very good and beautiful haiku in this contest, and I would send prizes to 44 people if I could (it was my short list). I thank you all for our haiku friendship that spans continents! :) What I was looking in a haiku was its sense, deep awareness of the moment, fresh images with a probable more profound or even symbolic meanings behind the surface, and faithfulness to the theme of the painting. Above all that, the most appealing to me are those haiku that capture my emotions, speak to my feelings, and involve me somehow in the scene shown. Дорогие друзья, С большой радостью объявляю РЕЗУЛЬТАТЫ конкурса. Как всегда, хороших хайку намного больше, чем призов -- я бы выслала 44 приза, если б могла (это был мой шорт лист). | Dear fellow haijins! This is the Ninth bilingual 'Calico Cat' haiku contest. Finally, a real spring in my area of Michigan, and the theme of our contest is about the whole season of spring. Those from the Southern hemisphere -- please feel free to write on the theme of the painting accordingly.
Anyone may participate in this contest by sending up to three haiku on the theme of my new sumi painting -- I named it "Pondering on beauty and utility" (Hare and Camellia Flower). Submit your haiku here in the LJ, right below this announcement, in the comments section. This contest is a blitz, so you only have two days to submit. Your haiku should appear in the comments section of this post no later than Wednesday, April 29, before 2pm EST (New York time). So, you have a little bit longer than two days, Monday and Tuesday (and tonight!), to submit your haiku.
I will translate all the haiku, and place them here in a new post for you to comment and discuss. Then, after about two days of discussion, I will announce the results. The First Prize winner will receive this painting: the original sumi-e on a Shiki-shi rice paper, size 9 x 12 inches (22 x 30 cm). The Second and Third Prize winners will also receive sumi-e as prizes, originals or prints -- the details will be posted later.
All haiku will be translated in English and Russian both ways, so that everyone can read every haiku! You are all welcome to discuss and comment on the haiku, when I post them in both languages for discussion. The contest is not anonymous, since I am the only one who conducts it :) We enjoy this contest for the love of haiku, and the only thing that counts, is the quality of your haiku, not a "name". With so many beautiful haiku submitted, my task was very difficult. As it happens, some of the very good works strayed from the theme of the contest, and of the painting, too far to claim awards.
